Amy Farnum

Planning a remodel and wondering how long the process might take? Whether it’s a kitchen update, a bathroom overhaul, or a whole-home transformation, remodeling is an exciting yet involved process that requires careful planning, design, and execution. While timelines can vary depending on a multitude of factors, understanding the typical steps from start to finish will give you a better idea of what to expect.

Here, we’ll break down the key phases of remodeling and their timelines—from initial consultation to construction completion—to help you prepare for your home’s next big transformation.

What Affects Remodel Timelines?

Before we get into the phases, it’s essential to know what factors can impact how long your remodel will take. For instance:

  • Scope of Work: A single-room refresh is faster than a multi-room or whole-home remodel.

  • Permits and Approvals: Some projects require permits, which may add time due to planning board or HOA approvals.

  • Custom Details & Materials: Highly custom designs or high-end materials may have longer lead times.

  • Contractor Schedules: Demand for skilled contractors and tradespeople can affect project timelines.

With these considerations in mind, let's explore the full remodeling process and the timeframes typically associated with each step.

Step 1: The Design Discovery Phase

Timeline: 2-3 Weeks

The remodeling process begins with your discovery meeting. This is where you’ll sit down with a designer or design-build firm to share your project goals, personal style, budget, and vision for your space. With your designer, you should feel a strong emphasis being placed on listening to you and trying to identify your pain points, while mapping out how a thoughtful approach to design and construction can solve them.

Key Activities:

  • Initial consultation (free with some firms, like ours).

  • Discussing your project scope, ideas, and dreams.

  • Budget alignment and initial feasibility discussions.

This step sets the foundation for the entire process, ensuring your goals and needs are at the heart of all design decisions. While it’s often too early to determine the exact cost of your remodel at this stage, preliminary estimates are discussed before signing a design contract. This ensures that clients, designers, and contractors are aligned before finalizing a design contract.

Step 2: Preliminary Design and Planning

Timeline: 4-8 Weeks

Once your vision is outlined and initial figures are agreed upon, the design team will translate your ideas into a detailed plan. Expect several creative revisions to ensure every detail aligns with your expectations.

Key Activities:

  • Measuring the space and/or reviewing existing blueprints.

  • Developing initial design concepts.

  • Refining designs based on your feedback.

At this stage, your designer will create a conceptual design that may include floor plans, inspirational mood boards, or even 3D renderings to help you visualize the proposed changes. The estimate will also be updated based upon this scope of work, with transparent construction milestone billing. The result? A clear roadmap for the next steps.

Step 3: Permits and Approvals

Timeline: 2-8 Weeks

Obtaining permits is a crucial step for any project that requires them. The timeline for submitting plans and applications to your local government or HOA can vary widely, ranging from a few weeks to several months. Factors such as the complexity of the remodel, the need for an engineer’s approval, and the workload of your local permitting office can all impact the process.

Key Activities:

  • Submitting plans for approval.

  • Reviewing and revising plans to comply with regulations.

While this step can feel daunting, an experienced design-build partner will handle the process smoothly. They’ll work with you to ensure the necessary paperwork is filed correctly and that any revisions are quickly addressed. This expertise will save you time, money, and stress by avoiding costly delays or fines.

Step 4: Finish Selection and Final Details

Timeline: 4-8 Weeks

After the design is approved, you'll move on to selecting finishes, fixtures, hardware, and materials. The choices you make here will shape the look and feel of your new space, making it customized just for you.

Key Activities:

  • Working with trade experts source materials (e.g., custom cabinetry, flooring, tile).

  • Collaborating with the design team to finalize every detail.

  • Confirming the final design layout and specs.

This stage can be as quick or as drawn-out as your decision-making allows. Some clients enjoy taking their time to compare options, while others prefer to finalize decisions quickly. Based on our experience, clients undergoing a large project, like designing an entire house, tend to prefer reviewing selections room by room, rather than assessing all the tile choices for the entire home at once. While this approach may require multiple visits to the same vendor and extend the timeline slightly, it makes the process far more manageable and less overwhelming.

Step 5: Pre-Construction Preparation

Timeline: 2-4 Weeks

Once permits are secured and key design selections have been made, it’s time to get ready for construction! During this phase, your contractor and designer will finalize schedules, confirm material delivery dates, and ensure the site is prepared.

Key Activities:

  • Scheduling contractors and tradespeople.

  • Ordering remaining materials.

  • Setting up site protection (e.g., dust barriers, floor protection).

This is also the time to clear out personal items from the space being remodeled and make any necessary accommodations to live around the construction. For a kitchen remodel, for example, we recommend setting up a mini-kitchen elsewhere in the house that allows you to refrigerate and cook convenient food and wash dishes as needed.

Step 6: Construction

Timeline (Let's Break It Down):

  • Minor remodels (small bathrooms, bedrooms): 4-8 weeks

  • Major remodels (kitchens, master bathrooms, or multi-room): 8-24 weeks

  • Whole-home remodels or additions: 6-18 months

The lengthiest part of the process, construction involves everything from demolition to installation and finishing touches. Your project begins to physically take shape, with contractors carefully bringing the design to life. If you work with a design-build firm, your designer will help ensure every detail is executed properly and develop solutions to any issues that may arise during installations.

Key Activities:

  • Site preparation and demolition.

  • Structural changes and updates (e.g., moving walls, installing plumbing, wiring new electrical).

  • Installing cabinets, floors, lights, and fixtures.

  • Painting, cleaning, and final touch-ups.

During construction, clear communication is essential. Reputable firms prioritize regular updates and remain readily available to address any questions or concerns. Stay engaged by maintaining consistent contact with your project manager or designer, and don’t hesitate to share any changes or adjustments you’d like to make. Building a strong, collaborative relationship with your contractor and design team ensures a smoother, more seamless construction experience.

Step 7: Final Walkthrough and Project Completion

Timeline: 1-2 Weeks

Before returning the reins back to you, your contractors will conduct a final walkthrough to ensure everything is completed to your satisfaction. Any minor finishing touches will be addressed until the project is truly complete. This moment marks the completion of your remodeling project and the start of your life in a beautifully transformed space.

Key Activities:

  • Inspecting the remodel for quality and accuracy.

  • Addressing any last-minute touch-ups or fixes.

  • Sharing care and maintenance instructions for new materials and finishes.

As the owner, you’ll be given an opportunity to inspect the final result and provide any feedback before signing off on the project’s completion. At this point, it’s important to review any care and maintenance instructions for new materials or finishes in order to extend their lifespan. Once everything is in place and you’re completely satisfied with the outcome, your remodel is complete and you can enjoy your newly transformed space.

Understanding Overlaps in a Remodeling Timeline: Why Do Some Phases Intersect?

If you noticed that some phases in the remodeling timeline overlap, you’ve got a sharp eye! But why do these overlaps occur? Let’s dive into why certain stages have clear cutoffs while others blend into one another:

Design Discovery to Preliminary Design: These stages have a definitive end. Why? Once the discovery phase is complete, a contract is signed to move forward. This creates a clear transition to the next phase.

Preliminary Design to Permitting: These phases overlap slightly because feedback from officials during the permitting process may require design revisions. It’s a necessary step to ensure everything aligns with regulations.

Permitting to Final Selections: There’s a hard boundary here. Why? It’s crucial not to over-design or select finishes prematurely, only to find out a design isn’t approved during permitting. Once the final design is locked in, we move forward with finish selections and detailed planning.

Finish Selections to Construction Prep: These phases intertwine. While finishes like cabinetry and appliances must be finalized before construction begins, other choices, like paint colors, can wait until more elements are installed. At the same time, construction prep—both for your daily life and the contractors’ needs—can begin during the finish selection process.

Construction to Completion: Construction is the longest and most variable phase. When the project is nearing the finish line, your contractor will create a "punch list" that gives direction to what remains on the project. Once that is complete, the project is ready for final inspection and completion.
